The city of Lawrenceville was chartered as the county seat of Gwinnett in 1821. The location was chosen because the land was geographically the closest to the center—heart—of the county. The courthouse square became the center of government and commerce for the surrounding farming community. Today, the city, undamaged by the Civil War, exists as a monument to the past and a historic backdrop for fine dining, unique shopping, and a venue for concerts, weddings, and family oriented events. The city was named after Captain James Lawrence, commander of the frigate Chesapeake during a battle on June 1, 1813, off the coast near Boston, Massachusetts. Lawrence's command to his crew, "Tell the men to fire faster and not to give up the ship," inspired Gwinnett resident William Maltbie to suggest that the town be named in the Captain's honor.
